The Academic Department of Gastroenterology guarantees undergraduate education in gastroenterology and hepatology in Czech and English languages to the full extent. Post-graduate education is based on this too. There were 10 students in the doctorate study programme (present and combined forms of study) in the academic year 2006/2007. The Academic Department of Gastroenterology is also an accredited institution for national qualifying exam training in gastroenterology. Members of the Department participate in shaping the guidelines of the Czech Gastroenterology Association and the Czech Hepatological Society of the Czech Medical Association of J.Ev.Purkyně. A long series of monographies, educational texts and publications in national and foreign journals have stemmed from this department. Organising and co-organising scientific and educational conferences both national (Hradec Gastroenterology Days, Czech Gastroenterology and Hepatology Congress, Hepatology Days and so on) and international (Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, Prague Hepatology Meeting and so on) are also important activities.
Study of Helicobacter pylori infection, digestive endoscopy, Barrett’s oesophagus, portal hypertension and TIPS, idiopathic bowel inflammation and breath testing are some of the main scientific programmes. The Department of Gastroenterology is an investigation institution for a range of scientific projects. Experimental digestive endoscopy is an important investigative area and arose from cooperation with the Institute of Experimental Biopharmacy at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Department of Radiobiology, Faculty of Military Health Sciences, University of Defence.
