Dpt. of Gastroenterology at the FM HK is one of the leading gastroenterology research centres in Central Europe with an established university (Faculty of Pharmacy, HK), inter-university (University of Defence, Brno, University Hradec Králové, University of Pardubice), and international scientific cooperation (Spain, Portugal, Hungary). Current research projects include (among others): markers of disease activity in coeliac disease; gastrointestinal motor disorders in connective tissue diseases; oesophageal microbiome in systemic scleroderma; quality of life in oesophageal achalasia, artificial intelligence in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Its research results are documented by long-lasting scientometric records.

Research directions and objectives:

Preclinical studies in experimental pigs are based on a 15-year experience (pharmacology, digestive endoscopy, microbiome, morphometry, functional motility studies).

Artificial intelligence in digestive endoscopy already resulted in several papers in the past. The research is based on a running cooperation with University Hradec Králové.

Cell-line models of colorectal neoplasia (2D monolayers, 3D organoids, 3D spheroids), in cooperation with Department of Pathology, Department of Medical Biology and Genetics of our Faculty (Biomedical Research Centre).

Molecular biology and genetics of rare gastrointestinal neoplasias, such as gastric adenocarcinoma and proximal polyposis of the stomach, familial adenomatous polypsis, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

Gut microbiome in health and disease represents a complex research programme (digestive endoscopy, microbiome, immunological markers).
