The Academic Department of Gastroenterology at the Medical Faculty in Hradec Kralove is one of the most important Academic Departments of Internal Medicine not only because it includes medical care for seven human organs but also because of its narrow relationship with other medical disciplines (surgery, oncology, biochemistry, immunology, diabetology, endocrinology).
Gastroenterology and hepatology have a great tradition in Hradec Kralove and the department has been one of the best in the Czech Republic for many years now. This represents a great responsibility and challenge for the present generation of gastroenterologists and hepatologists. The main functions of the Academic Department of Gastroenterology are teaching, science and research together with clinical gastroenterology and hepatology practice (at the Second Department of Internal Medicine, led by Prof. Jaroslav Malý, MD.)
Gastroenterology and hepatology comprises an in-patient clinic (30 beds on ward D and others in the other Departments), an endoscopy unit, out-patient gastroenterology clinic and laboratory for functional gastroenterology and hepatology.
